Which languages were supported and which were banned in different countries after the National Socialist power came there as a result of the war of 1939-1945? How was the education and work of state and public organizations organized in the occupied countries in terms of the languages used?
The book "Language and War" for the first time describes the language policy of the German authorities in such occupied Slavic countries as Ukraine, Belarus, Poland, the Czech Republic and some others during the Second World War. A separate section is devoted to the language policy of the German authorities in the occupied territories during the First World War.
The book was written on the basis of archival documents, the most important of which were first translated into Russian by the author and placed as an appendix at the end of the book. It also contains unique maps that graphically represent the language policy during World War II in Central and Eastern Europe.
The general picture of the language policy in 1939-1945, presented by the author of the book on the basis of archival documents, often contradicts the concepts of Germanization of the population in the occupied countries, created primarily in some post-socialist countries.
The book (600 pages) will be of interest not only to specialists in sociolinguistics, but also to historians, as well as to a wide range of inquisitive readers.
