The book tells about a family of Russian exiles who left Russia during one of the most difficult and dramatic periods in its history - the 1920s. The plot is based on real events that took place in the twentieth century, from the First World War to the present day. The prototypes of the main characters are the author's parents and his friend, the world ballet star, French dancer and stage director of Russian origin Vladimir Skuratov.

The author of the book, Gavriil Nikolaevich Simonov, was born in 1930 in Paris into a family of hereditary military men. After graduating from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Sorbonne, he worked in the laboratories of Irina and Friedrich Joliot-Curie and the Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg at the University of California, defended the first doctoral dissertation in France in the field of high energies, founded the Center for Nuclear Research near Bordeaux, published a number of books on physics and biology . In 1992 he was awarded the French Legion of Honor. His latest works are devoted to the problems of gerontology, and the book "How to live to be 120 years old, or the New Eternity" has been translated into many languages, including Russian.

The scientific activity of G.N. Simonov is combined with an interest in literature. He is the founder of the International Association of Friends of I.A. Bunin, organizer and participant of international Bunin conferences. Recently, the Simonov family acquired Bunin's villa "Belvedere" in Grasse, where it is planned to create a house-museum of the writer. Gavriil Nikolaevich Simonov published a collection of his poems in French "Flowers of Life", the book "In the XX century: 21 stories of a Russian Frenchman" (M., 2003), in collaboration with L.L. Kovaleva-Ogorodnova biographical excursus "Bunin and Rachmaninoff" (Moscow: "Russian Way", 2006).

“In the summer of 1995, Igor and Viktor decided to go to Russia to see their parents' homeland. Leaving the plane, they touched the Russian land, with which they always felt an inseparable connection. The country seemed to them a little like the one, the stories about which they remembered since childhood ... "

“To complete this trip to the homeland of their ancestors, Igor and Victor went to the Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois cemetery. Each carefully held a small bag in his hands. Pushing the entrance gates, they unanimously said: “This is the last tribute worthy of our parents. We brought several handfuls of earth from Russia to your graves...””
