A drama in four acts and five scenes. Owner's new binding. Damp spots on first pages. Gift inscription.

K. R.'s play on the gospel story "The King of the Jews" and the author's notes to it were used by M. A. Bulgakov as material for the novel "The Master and Margarita".

The author of the drama "King of the Jews" is Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich Romanov (1827-1892), cousin of Nicholas II, president of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, who wrote under the pseudonym K.R. Despite the high artistic and moral level and positive reviews, the play was banned by the Russian Synod due to the discrepancy between individual interpretations of the characters' images and canonical ideas. By permission of the Tsar, the play was staged by the amateur court theater of the Hermitage, and only a few performances were held, mainly for a high-ranking audience. The music for the play was written by A.K. Glazunov, director N.N. Arbatov. Joseph of Arimathea, the secret disciple of Christ, was played by the author himself, Konstantin Romanov.

I. A. Goncharov, Ya. P. Polonsky, and A. A. Fet corresponded with the Grand Duke, who appreciated his taste and even instructed him to correct his poems. P. I. Tchaikovsky spoke enthusiastically about the poetic work of K. R., to whom the Grand Duke dedicated one of his poems (“Oh people, you often hurt me so painfully ...”). Belonged to the so-called old school, was the successor of the classical traditions. The poet K. R. did not have a first-class talent, but he took his place in the history of Russian literature. Many of his poems were melodious and were set to music (the most famous is the romance "I opened the window ..." with music by P. I. Tchaikovsky, who also composed music for "I did not love you at first ...", "The separation has passed" and other poems K. R.). He himself wrote several romances to verses by V. Hugo (“The ray of the daylight flashed, dear”), A. K. Tolstoy (“Do not believe me, friend, when grief is in excess”, “Oh, do not try to calm the disturbing spirit” and the soul quietly flew through the heavens"), A. N. Maikova ("I already dreamed of him once" and "Far away, on the sea itself" - they were first printed in 1880 in Germany; in 1889, P. Jurgenson's music publishing house released them in Moscow.
