The author of this book, later a famous German writer, was only seventeen years old when he was taken prisoner by the Russians at the height of the First World War. In the Siberian camps, the young man secretly kept a diary for four years, which formed the basis of this work. The book contains notes from 1915–1918. They do not tell about battles or heroic deeds, but tell about the "backyard" of the war, where people died ingloriously, without messages in victorious reports.
