The memoirs of Walter Schellenberg, the chief of political intelligence of Nazi Germany, who was part of Himmler's inner circle, are published in Russian for the first time. The book is of undoubted interest as evidence of a participant in many behind-the-scenes events related to the Second World War. However, the reliability of some of the facts presented in the book may raise doubts. The same can be said about Schellenberg's interpretation of the "Tukhachevsky case", the activities of Gestapo chief Muller, and others.
The book reproduces the foreword by Alan Bullock, which clarifies the history of the publication of memoirs and gives an assessment of the personality of their author.
