Vladimir Nabokov’s “Lolita” not only created a sensation among the writer’s contemporaries - it remains to this day one of the most popular novels in the world. However, few people know that the plot of the book is largely inspired by the story of the kidnapping of Sally Horner, an eleven-year-old girl, about whom Nabokov learned from the newspapers.

Sarah Winemain, journalist and editor of the website CrimeReads, sheds light on Horner's tragic fate for the first time since the 1950s and describes the circumstances in which Nabokov's acclaimed novel was written. “The True Story of Lolita,” based on court documents, memoirs of Horner’s relatives, previously unpublished FBI materials and testimonies of Nabokov’s loved ones, forces you to look at a well-known plot from a new perspective - and think about how an artistic representation of real events can affect our perception crimes.
