One of Walter Scott's most popular novels, Ivanhoe tells about fascinating and heroic events in the life of medieval England. The writer refers to an important historical moment when King Richard the Lionheart returns to England after the Crusades and being in captivity. The country is torn apart by conflicts between the Saxons and the Normans, and the main character, the Saxon knight Ivanhoe, ardently devoted to the Norman king Richard, is offered as an example of how two warring peoples can get along on the same territory. Scenes from folk life, folklore images, historical realities only form the background, but the main thing is adventure: jousting tournaments, burning castles, defenseless beautiful ladies in trouble, and brave knights who come to their aid at the last, it would seem, moment. The interweaving of several storylines, the delay of the action at the climax, the change in the rhythm of the narrative - all this contributes to creating drama and maintaining a tense narrative.
