When studying the Kiev-Novgorod era, the cities and lands of Western Rus' are described as a natural part of Rus'. However, the subsequent historical period undergoes amazing transformations in scientific perception: Muscovy turns out to be not just the successor of Kievan Rus, but its only successor. In science, there has been a tradition of reducing the history of Rus' of the 14th-16th centuries to the history of Muscovy - not the most important and not the most civilized part of the country. The book is devoted to an investigation of the historical development of Western Russia specifically and a comparison of the processes that took place in two parts of the medieval country: Western Rus' and Moscow Rus'. A large place in the book is devoted to the phenomena of social consciousness - an explanation of the reasons why the history of Western Rus' is hushed up by scientists and "sank to the bottom", like the Russian version of Atlantis.
