Alexander Petrovich Dyakonov (1873-1943) - professor, master of theology of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, one of the best experts in ancient Syrian church history, a researcher of Monophysitism and Nestorianism. The work is dedicated to the life and labors of John of Ephesus (506-585/586), a Monophysite bishop, author of numerous historical works. John of Ephesus (c. 507 - c. 586) - Bishop of Asia, a consistent supporter of Miaphysite Christology, one of the leaders of the anti-Chalcedonian opposition in the Byzantine Empire. One of the earliest and most important Syriac historians. Under Emperor Justinian the Great, he held a high position at court and played one of the key roles in the missionary and general church policy of Justinian and Empress Theodora. John was the leader of the metropolitan Monophysites during the reign of Emperor Justinian I, on whose orders in 542 he conducted missionary activities in the Ephesus region. He fought against the Jews and Montanists in Asia Minor, against the pagans in the capital. After the death of Justinian, he spent many years in prison for his anti-Chalcedonian activities. The works written by John of Ephesus are a unique source for studying the Monophysite community in the 6th century. His extensive "Church History" is a valuable historical source, and contains, in particular, information about the invasions of the Slavs, Avars and Huns in 540-570.
