Dal's Explanatory Dictionary (Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language) is a fundamental work of Russian philological and lexicographical thought. Vladimir Dal created this famous dictionary almost a century and a half ago, but today there is not the slightest doubt about its relevance. The dictionary contains about 200 thousand words. Along with the vocabulary of the literary language of the first half of the 19th century, i.e. language of Pushkin and Gogol, the dictionary contains regional words, as well as terminology of various professions and crafts. For compiling the dictionary, he was absolutely deservedly awarded a number of prestigious prizes and awards, including the Konstantinov Medal and the Lomonosov Prize.
