"Essays on times and events", part two is a natural continuation of the previous book with the same title, the story of which was brought to the second half of the eighteenth century.
In this book, we continue the story of the history of the Jews of the Russian Empire - with 1772 to 1882. From the first partition of Poland, when tens of thousands of Jews became Russian subjects, to the pogroms of 1881-82, which marked a milestone in their historical path.
The author read a lot of works on this topic, scattered in books and magazines, leafed through old newspapers , took advantage of the memories of eyewitnesses to then retell in chronological order - year after year, event after event. Sometimes the author was fascinated by the style of recordings of the past, which one involuntarily wanted to imitate, sometimes it was a successful phrase that was worth keeping - one can say that these essays were written together with the author by those who were not left indifferent to the history of Russian Jews. These people were closer than we are to the events of our book; they more acutely felt the atmosphere, the nerve of that epoch, and this is also why I wanted to use their testimonies and assessments, their pain, despair and joy. To all of them, unnamed, who have preserved bit by bit our former life, a deep bow and gratitude. We can truly thank them if, in turn, we leave our testimonies, so that those who follow us will chronicle the Jewish life of our time in the future.
