Textbook of Russian history by prof. S.F. Platonov, as a result of the author’s long-term pedagogical activity, was first published in two parts in 1909-1910. and immediately became the most popular textbook on Russian history in high school. For its time, it was certainly the most successful presentation of the latest achievements of historical science for the school education system. Certain chapters written by the author based on his own research, such as the history of the Time of Troubles and the era of Ivan the Terrible, have not lost their significance today. Rich experience in teaching in high school and leadership of a women's pedagogical institute allowed the author to take into account the real needs of teachers and students of high school when preparing the manual. Platonov's book is distinguished by brevity, accessibility, beauty and clarity of presentation of complex historical problems, and ease of use of educational material. Written at the beginning of the 20th century, the textbook, naturally, does not fully meet modern requirements for textbooks for secondary schools and cannot be used as the main textbook for teaching students, but as a result of the thoughts and activities of a major scientist, it will provide both teachers and schoolchildren with a wealth of material for comparisons and generalizations. In recent years, reissues of gymnasium textbooks by V.O. Klyuchevsky and D.I. Ilovaisky have been published, and S.F. Platonov’s “Textbook of Russian History for Secondary Schools” will be an excellent addition to them, another point of view on Russian history.
