The book was composed of the works of Oscar Wilde (1854-1900), which served as the basis for the novel about the “brilliant Oscar” by the Polish writer, master of biographical prose, Jan Parajadowski (1895-1978) “The King of Life” (1930), also included in the book. Wilde is represented by the works: “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, “Salome”, “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” and “The Prison Confession”.
“Among the vulgarity of the 19th century, the flower of the Greek legend blossomed. In ancient times, statues would have been erected for him... temples would have been erected,” Parandovsky writes in one of his essays and compares Wilde with “a golden statue, which human mediocrity, stupid and cruel stupidity threw down on the gray slimy pavement.” Oscar Parandovsky is a handsome and bright person, a brilliant conversationalist, charming anyone, and in misfortune, capable of compassion.
