Boris Konstantinovich Zaitsev (1881 -1972) is an outstanding Russian writer of difficult fate. Having gained recognition and fame in pre-revolutionary Russia, he left his homeland in 1922 and spent almost 50 years in exile. The influence of the religious and philosophical direction of N. Berdyaev and L. Shestov, with whom he maintained close relations, affected such of his works as “Athos”, “Valaam”, “The Life of St. Sergius”. Although B. Zaitsev is called an impressionist in prose, the traditions of Russian realistic literature remained paramount for him. His artistic biographies “Zhukovsky”, “The Life of Turgenev”, “Chekhov” are imbued with love and respect for Russian classics.
