The collection includes works by Japanese playwrights published in Russian translation for the first time, created in the period from the 1890s to the mid-1930s. These plays belong to the so-called shingeki theatre, a theater of new drama that emerged in Japan under the influence of European dramaturgy.
The play, Onoe and Idahachi (1915), was written by Okamoto Kido (1873–1939), a playwright who also devoted his work exclusively to Kabuki theater and also tried to innovate traditional drama. The tragic love story of the courtesan Onoe and the young samurai Idaiu Harada is based on an actual incident that happened in 1746, when the lovers, not seeing the possibility of uniting forever, decided to die together.
