At the beginning of the 20th century, for the centenary anniversary of the birth of I.I.Sreznevsky (1812-1880), "Materials for the Dictionary of the Old Russian language in written monuments" were published. They were released in separate issues for 22 years (from 1890 to 1912) and compiled a whole era in Russian lexicography, having approved the right to exist historical lexicography as an independent genre. "Materials for the Dictionary of the Old Russian Language", as it were, synthesized the philological knowledge of the 19th century in the field of Slavicism, the history of the Russian language. This three -volume labor, modestly called "materials", stands on a par with the great lexicographic creations of J. Grimma, V. Dal, V. Karajich, E. Littra. In the preface to the reissue in 1958, S.G. Barkhudarov wrote: "The dictionary of I.I.Sreznevsky is a magnificent monument of Russian historical lexicography. Like any classical work, he will never lose his historical significance, even when more perfect dictionaries of the Old Russian language will be published."
