Reprint reproduction of the 1893 edition (St. Petersburg, Printing House of the Imperial Academy of Sciences).
Some volumes have additional tit. l. orig.: Materials for the dictionary of the Old Russian language based on written monuments of St. Petersburg: Type. Imp. Academician Sciences, 1893-1912
At the beginning of the 20th century, on the centenary anniversary of the birth of I.I. Sreznevsky (1812-1880), “Materials for a dictionary of the Old Russian language based on written monuments” were published. They were published in separate issues for 22 years (from 1890 to 1912) and constituted an entire era in Russian lexicography, establishing the right to exist of historical lexicography as an independent genre. “Materials for a dictionary of the Old Russian language” seemed to synthesize the philological knowledge of the 19th century in the field of Slavic studies and the history of the Russian language. This three-volume work, modestly called "Materials", stands on a par with the great lexicographical works of J. Grimm, V. Dahl, V. Karadzic, E. Littre. In the preface to the reissue in 1958, S.G. Barkhudarov wrote: “The dictionary of I.I. Sreznevsky is a majestic monument of Russian historical lexicography. Like any classical work, it will never lose its historical significance, even when more advanced dictionaries are published Old Russian language".
