We are confronted with omens and superstitions at every step; sometimes we do not believe in them, more often we follow them just in case. But superstitions do not grow from scratch, they are a reflection of ancient views on the world, embodied in world mythology. The study of their origin and subsequent metamorphoses is a very rewarding work, because it reveals not only the fears and desires of the distant past, but also the hidden springs of many modern ideas and prejudices. Understanding them allows us to better understand human nature in general and the history of the mental development of our ancestors in particular.
