The adventure-historical novel Osceola, Chief of the Seminole (1858) by Mine Reed is one of his best works. It is dedicated to one of the most dramatic episodes in the struggle of the Indians for their independence - the Second Seminole War (1835), the heroic resistance of the Seminole Indian tribe to the Americans, who seek to expel them from their ancestral lands and resettle them in other places. The cunning and cruelty of the whites is opposed by the patriotism and courage of the Indians. But the lack of unity among the Indians, as well as the numerical and military superiority of the Americans, doomed this struggle to failure. Against this historical background, an exciting intrigue unfolds, full of secrets, exciting adventures, and unexpected outcomes. At the center of the novel is the story of the relationship between the Americans George Randolph and his sister Virginia, on the one hand, and the Indian chief Osceola and his sister, Mayumi, on the other. Their mutual friendship and love only grows stronger, having gone through a series of trials prepared for them by fate. The dynamic development of the action, vivid images of the characters, picturesque pictures of nature, exotic flavor - all this makes "Oceola" a fascinating read.
The book is intended for older children.
