The meaning of many historical names is hidden. Historians have been arguing for centuries about the meaning of the names Kyiv, Moscow, Samara, Ryazan, Smolensk. The author tries to put an end to these disputes by proposing a method (the concept of etymological series) to identify the semantic and etymological meaning of toponyms. Kyiv, Samara and Cambridge are synonymous; they are cities located at crossings. The modern Russian language developed in the 16th-18th centuries, so most of our own names from earlier times cannot be understood within its framework without etymological analysis. The book opens up new directions for historical research. It is intended for those who are interested in Russian and world history, historical geography, Russian language, etymology.
