Shardik is a very solid, thoughtful book about a bear and a hunter, whose destinies go, as they say, hand in hand, closely intertwined at key points. There is nothing superfluous in the book, despite its volume, everything is intelligently interconnected, most of the characters’ characters are not unambiguous and not flat. These are individuals who develop along the flow of the narrative, understanding and realizing something for themselves. This is the story of Kelderek, a simple hunter from Ortelga, who was lucky enough to meet his God. At the same time, this is the story of Shardik, an unusually large bear who was driven into the vicinity of Ortelga by a forest fire. And these are also the stories of many people who unexpectedly encountered their beliefs and chose very different paths for their future lives. Some decided to follow the bear everywhere, while others ran away from their faith. Some set out to destroy the bear as a dangerous animal, others tried to use its symbolism to achieve their own goals.
