Vladimir Voinovich's novel "Monumental Propaganda" was awarded the State Prize of Russia in Literature for 2001.
The action takes place in places familiar to the reader of the famous "Chonkin", and the main character, the unbending Aglaya Revkina, comes from the same place. She and other heroes live in the years lived by many of us - from the harsh forty-ninth to the present day, with new Russians, driving around, as the local old women say, in "serdimes" and "merdises". "We live in a time when only an extreme skeptic has a chance to be a sage or even a prophet," writes Vladimir Voinovich. And yet in his book there is plenty of irony and humor, kindness and optimism.
