GREED - the novel is multifaceted and by no means straightforward. The story that Kamala Markandaya tells in it, in addition to its very real concrete content, carries an additional charge of broad generalizations that apply not only to the fate of individuals, but, as the writer herself points out, to the fate of entire powers and empires. However, this is done so unobtrusively that you start thinking about this second, additional plan later, when you turn the last page.
At the center of the novel is the story of the complex and dramatic relationship between Lady Caroline Bell, in whose veins the blood of several generations of English rulers of India flows, and Tamil Valmiki, a rootless peasant sub-shepherd from the south of India, gifted with an amazing gift of the artist.
