This first volume is entirely devoted to the history of Greece from its political and cultural sides. In view of the predominant importance of the latter for our publication, it was desirable to present the former in the shortest possible way, which, nevertheless, would be irreproachable from a scientific point of view and would provide all the materials necessary for a conscious attitude to the mental life of the parent of our culture. This was Pelman's essay "Essay on Greek History and Source Studies". We warn you that the role of this essay with us is auxiliary; it is not very easy to read, since its task is to give in a small space the whole essence of the political history of ancient Greece throughout its existence.
The main thing is the second essay, giving the history of Greek culture of the Achaean (Mycenaean), Hellenic and Attic periods before Alexander the Great. The original belongs to three prominent German scientists: Baumgarten'y, Poland'y and Wagner'y, of which the first processed art, the second - statehood and the third - literature with philosophy.
As is clear from what has been said, the outline of cultural history does not cover the entire period of time that is presented in the outline of political history: it is brought only to the era of Alexander the Great. The culture of the ecumenical or Hellenistic-Roman period that followed it will be depicted in a special essay, which is supposed to be placed in the third volume.
