The book is dedicated to an unusual type of Japanese miniature sculpture - netsuke. Netsuke (ne - "root", tsuke - "attach") is a keychain, a kind of counterweight, with which all kinds of small objects were worn at the belt. The need for such a device was caused by the absence of pockets in the Japanese national costume. Appearing as early as the 15th century as a household item, in the 18th century netsuke turns into an independent art form, combining the features of sculpture and applied art, having a specific set of forms, materials and a range of subjects. The heyday of the art of netsuke fell on the period of the 18th-19th centuries, which can rightfully be considered the "golden age" of miniature sculpture. The book presents biographies of 239 netsukeshi (netsuke carvers) who worked for almost three centuries: from the middle of the 18th century to the end of the 20th century. For the first time, the reader will be able to get acquainted with so many names that are practically unknown in our country, learn about carving schools and creative dynasties, genres and plots most often found in netsuke. The publication is richly illustrated, provided with an introductory article and a brief glossary of special terms, and the alphabetical principle underlying it allows you to quickly find the necessary information.
