The Literary Ghost is the debut novel by David Mitchell. It was this book, written with polyphony, which would later become an integral property of his prose, that made Mitchell famous. Intertwined on the pages of the novel are the life paths of a young sectarian who, at the behest of His Seer, staged a sarin attack in the Tokyo subway, and an aspiring saxophonist who works part-time in a collectible vinyl store, a bank manager from London who launders money from the Russian mafia in Hong Kong, and a veteran of British intelligence who decided to publish his memories, his “literary Negro” (and at the same time the leader of a punk band) and the ethereal ghost hovering over the Mongolian steppes, a female physicist from an Irish island who is being hunted by the Pentagon, the thieves of Hermitage paintings, a New York DJ and many, many others …
