The encyclopedia "Cities of Russia" is intended for a wide range of readers; it includes over 1,100 articles about all cities and the most famous rural settlements in Russia. Information is provided about the most important historical events, architectural landmarks, and geographical location of cities. Historical, architectural and natural objects and their surroundings are presented.

The economic and geographical description characterizes the history of the development of the city's economy, introduces the reader to the leading industries, largest enterprises, and main types of products.

Information about theaters, museums, higher educational institutions, and research institutes is provided.

In the sections devoted to the architectural and planning appearance of the city, the reader will find information about the general silhouette, features of the formation of the city layout, the most important historical and architectural monuments.

Brief information about the surrounding cities is also provided: tourism sites, resorts, natural monuments, centers of folk crafts.

Experienced specialists in history, geography, and architecture were involved in the preparation of the encyclopedia; materials from encyclopedic and reference publications of the 19th and early 20th centuries were also used.

The information received by the publishing house from local specialists: local historians, historians, geographers, public figures, employees of city institutions in almost all cities of the Russian Federation is of significant value.

Literary sources listed in bibliographic references are widely used.

Information on administrative-territorial and national-territorial divisions, names of cities and urban population, as well as names of streets, squares, individual organizations and institutions is mainly given as of January 1, 1991.

The encyclopedia is illustrated with color slides, unique photographs of the late 19th - early 20th centuries, and in some cases, reproductions of engravings and drawings.

Articles about ancient Russian cities are accompanied by color images of coats of arms with a description of each and the date of its highest approval.
