"The Tale of Bygone Years" is the earliest of the ancient Russian chronicles that have survived to this day. Traditionally, its authorship is attributed to Nestor, a monk of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, who lived at the turn of the 11th-12th centuries. The original edition of the chronicle was lost, but thanks to the efforts of copyists, the chronicle was preserved in several copies with minor deviations in the texts. The chronicler begins his story from biblical times in the introductory part and ends with the year 1117. "The Tale of Bygone Years" is the main source on the history of Ancient Rus' and will be of interest to all readers interested in history.
