The greatest French writer Marie-Henri Bayle , known under the pseudonym Stendhal (1783–1842), was one of the founders of the psychological novel and a keen expert on Italian art and music. He had the opportunity to participate in the Italian, Austrian, Prussian and Russian campaigns of Napoleon I, to witness the Battle of Borodino and the fire of Moscow, the Berezina flight of the French emperor. This edition contains the main works of Stendhal, including: the novels “Red and Black” (repeatedly filmed, including by S. Gerasimov (1976) with N. Eremenko and N. Belokhvostikova in the leading roles), “Lucien Levene (Red and white), “Parma Monastery” (“Parma Monastery”), “Armance, or Scenes from the life of the Paris Salon of 1827”.

Volume 1 includes the first and second parts (Chapters I-XIX) of the novel “Red and Black”.

Volume 2 includes the second part (Chapters XX-XLV) of the novel “Red and Black” and the first part of the novel “Lucien Leuven”.

Volume 3 includes the second part of the novel “Lucien Leuven”.

Volume 4 includes the novel “The Monastery of Parma”.

Volume 5 includes the novel “Armance”, as well as the stories and short stories “The Chest and the Ghost”, “Elisir of Love”, “ Minna von Wangel", "The Jew", "The Chevalier de Saint-Imier", "Feder".

Volume 11 contains “Notes of a Tourist”, remarkable in its subtlety of observations, and the 12th contains autobiographical works. “The Life of Henri Brulard” and “Memoirs of an Egotist.”

The author of the introductory article and comments is the largest Russian literary critic, Doctor of Philology, Professor Boris Georgievich Reizov (1902–1981), corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. The author of the illustrations (on loose-leaf sheets) is the artist Pyotr Naumovich Pinkisevich (1925–2004).
