The author conceived and began to write a generalizing work on the Gulag Archipelago (under this title) in the spring of 1958. Its volume seemed to be less than now, but the principle of successive chapters on the prison system, investigation, courts, stages, labor camps, hard labor, exile and spiritual changes during the years of confinement had already been adopted. Some chapters were written at the same time, but the work was interrupted, since there was clearly not enough material - events, cases, persons - based on the personal experience of the author and his friends alone. From the end of 1962, after the publication of "Ivan Denisovich", the author was flooded with letters from former prisoners, with proposals to meet, tell, and current ones. During 1963 and 1964, and through these letters and through many meetings, abundant material was gleaned from 227 witnesses. The author arranged their testimonies according to his former, now expanded and multiplied plan. In the autumn of 1964, the final plan of the work was drawn up - in seven parts, and all new supplementary materials fell into this design. In the winter of 1964/65 in Solotch (near Ryazan) parts Fifth and First were written. This work continued in Ryazan and Rozhdestve-na-Ist'ya in the summer of 1965 - and was interrupted in September, when the GB seized part of the author's archive. The materials of the "Archipelago" were immediately taken away by fellow convicts to a safe place ("Shelter", which even now cannot be named), where the author also secretly left for two winters, and there, completely separated from relatives and friends, did not having no written communication, only the assistance of nearby prisoners, he was finishing the book. (Outside of these months, in an open place of residence, one could only read the books he got - about trials, about camp "re-education", or do something else altogether.) Thus, by March 1967, the first six parts of The Archipelago were completed in the 2nd edition, reprinted by the author himself, and copies dispersed for safety. In the winter of 1967-68 in Solotch, the revision was still ongoing, especially on the basis of book materials. In May 1968, in Christmas-on-Istya, with the assistance of friends, the final edition of all three volumes was printed - and on the same days the film was sent abroad. From then until printing in 1973-74, the most minor changes were made. In August 1973, under tragic circumstances, the GB seized a non-basic, non-final version of "Archipelago" - and thereby prompted the immediate publication of the book (IMCA-press, Paris, December 1973), and soon the author was expelled from the USSR. Abroad, the flow of letters and personal testimonies continued, and this, together with some printed materials known in the West, prompted the author in places to add and refine. The final edition of the book is offered to the reader in the current collected works.
