< p>A novel depicting the events of 1775 - 1855. It gives a picture of the awakening and growth of the democratic and patriotic forces of Italy in the period following the French Revolution. Elements of an adventure novel give “Confession” exceptional dynamism, although in terms of genre it is closest to a historical novel with a philosophical and moralistic tendency. The hero of the book, Carlo Altoviti, finds himself involved in the events of Italian history at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. He actively participates in them, remaining a true patriot to the end, maintaining democratic beliefs and experiencing a feeling of great satisfaction that, despite the most difficult trials, he “managed, together with his people, to take a step in their history.” Carlo’s friend Pisana, a strong and selfless nature, goes through the same path, but in her own way. The novel contains a large number of characters - historical and fictional, depicted briefly but vividly. The destinies of Italian freedom fighters are intertwined in it with the destinies of Greek patriots seeking to free their homeland from the Turkish yoke. The book is imbued with the pathos of the national liberation struggle, and the first-person narrative form gives it lyrical emotion and warmth.
