Dedicated to a little-known and highly interesting story - the so-called "free-thinking case" - which took place in the 1820s in the Nizhyn Gymnasium, at the time when Gogol was studying there.
a group of professors and pupils of the gymnasium were accused.
Gogol was also involved in the interrogation.
The results of the investigation of this story were reported to the chief of gendarmes Benckendorff and Tsar Nicholas I himself. The writer, doctor of philological sciences S.I. Mashinsky, for a long time was engaged in searching for archival materials on this case. His search was successful. He attacked the trail of Aderkas's suitcase, the same Aderkas official who was sent to Nizhyn to investigate the "case of freethinking".
This suitcase contained about two thousand sheets of written paper.
What happened to Aderkas's archive ? How was it found? What is its content? How did Aderkas' materials make it possible to shed light on the whole "case of free-thinking" in a new way and understand the role it played in Gogol's life, in his creative biography?
You will learn about all this from the book Aderkas' Suitcase.
