The authors of this textbook faced a difficult task - to select from the vast wealth of Western literature the most characteristic and important. The choice of names was determined primarily by the school curriculum itself and the lists of writers' works proposed for optional courses. At the same time, the authors proceeded from the need to coherently outline the main stages in the development of literature from antiquity to the present, to acquaint schoolchildren with the main artistic trends (Renaissance realism, classicism, enlightenment realism, sentimentalism, romanticism, critical realism, etc.).
This will make it possible to present the development of foreign literature not simply as a change of names, but as a historically natural process. And it will allow a more independent approach to the organization of optional courses, for example, replacing one writer with another within a particular direction (depending on the availability of texts, as well as the interests of students and teachers).
The book can also be used in students' independent work, will give them the opportunity to navigate the works of writers whose works are recommended for extracurricular reading.
The book will serve as a useful source of necessary information about foreign literature when organizing circle work and during literary evenings.
In an effort to more fully outline the course of artistic development, the authors as far as possible, they turn to the history of fine arts. Individual examples help to more clearly present the originality of the artistic language of a particular era.
