Collected texts of works, the study of which is provided for in the literature curriculum for secondary schools. In accordance with this program, in the 8th grade, students are introduced to the works of the French classicist Moliere (one of two plays offered to choose from - “The Miser” or “The Bourgeois in the Nobility”) and the English romantic Byron (lyrics and one of two poems to choose from - " Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" or "The Corsair"), in class IX - with the greatest works of human genius - Shakespeare's Hamlet and Goethe's Faust (first part), as well as with one of the works of classical French literature of the 19th century - Stendhal's novella Vanina Vanini" or Balzac's short story "Gobseck". The texts of the works included in the anthology are preceded by brief literary and biographical information about the writers and a brief bibliography of works in Russian. The anthology is built on the principle of chronological arrangement of material.
