The city gates of Königsberg - what were they like in those days when the city was part of East Prussia?
The very first gates of Königsberg led to the castle courtyard and were located in eastern wing. They were built in the 13th century during the construction of the order's castle. The medieval stone walls that surrounded Altstadt, Kneiphof and Löbenicht in the 14th century were soon lost after the construction of the First Rampart fortification around Königsberg at the beginning of the 17th century. It was 15 kilometers long and consisted of 26 bastions, 8 half-bastions and had 8 gates. All its buildings were wooden and dilapidated by the time of the construction of the Second Rampart fortification.
The city gates of Königsberg that have survived to this day were built in the middle of the 19th century according to the design of the architect, General Lieutenant of the engineering troops Ernst Ludwig von Aster. By decree of the Prussian king Frederick Wilhelm IV dated April 5, 1843, the creation of a Second Rampart fortification around Königsberg was prescribed. The architect Astaire was a man with good artistic taste. He made the gate in one of the directions of English neo-Gothic - Tudor style. They were built from thrice-fired brick, which has the highest strength.
