The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio, a literary monument of the early Renaissance, is one of the most amazing books in the history of world culture. This is also a collection of exquisite parodies, under the scope of which almost all the main "classics and contemporaries" fell: from ancient authors to masters of the rapidly maturing Italian prose. This is also a series of sophisticated everyday anecdotes, funny and not very funny, which suddenly became a model of high art. It is also a prototype of an adventurous European novel with constant characters, written two and a half centuries before Cervantes' masterpiece.
The Decameron is still being read today, because in it, for the first time and, as it turned out, forever, a universal type of a new European was created in fiction . In the two-week conversations of the "Decameronian" characters, the stylistic and genre foundations of all the literature of young Europe were laid. Boccaccio was followed by Cervantes and Shakespeare, Rabelais and Moliere, Gogol and Dostoevsky.
