More info

The archives of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences contain five map plans compiled by Antal Reguli during his trip to the Northern Urals in 1844–1845. Based on these manuscripts, in 1846 in St. Petersburg, Reguli compiled the first detailed map of the Northern Urals. The first plan of the map (map No. 1, 1844) describes the upper reaches of the river. Lozva, where Reguli began to collect linguistic materials from the Mansi of this region. It contains 176 toponyms. These are the names not only of the upper Lozva, but also of the regions of the upper Sosva, Southern Sosva, upper Pelym, upper Vishera and the western slope of the Northern Urals. In this article, the author cites and analyzes the toponyms of map No. 1 as the first detailed source of the toponymy of this region. 176 toponyms are analyzed from the etymological point of view in comparison with the materials collected and proetymologized by A. K. Matveev. In addition to 69 previously known etymologies, the author offers about 100 new interpretations of toponyms, based on the materials of the manuscript.
