The book is written in the form of memories of the experience. Its author is a former officer of the Wehrmacht, who directly participated in the grandiose battle on the banks of the Volga, which led to the defeat of the encircled Nazi troops, unprecedented in the history of wars. As an eyewitness and participant in these events, he paints a picture of the tragic death of Field Marshal Paulus's army as a result of the refusal of the German command to accept the humane Soviet proposals for surrender. On the basis of his own experience, observations and reflections, Helmut Welz shows the gradual process of awareness by some of the German soldiers and officers of the crime and injustice of the war unleashed by Nazi Germany. Understanding this led Welz to the ranks of the fighters for a new, democratic Germany. The book sounds like a guise and accusation of German militarism, the traditions of which are being revived in the Bundeswehr. It was written with a noble goal - to prevent a repetition of the past, and serves as a warning to those who again harbor criminal plans against the countries of the socialist camp.
