The book is offered to high school students for reading and storytelling, for circle classes and literary evenings. It presents the work of Russian writers of the second half of the 19th century - the period of prosperity and the dominance of prose in literature. It includes the works of the great masters of artistic prose - Gogol, Turgenev, L. Tolstoy, Chekhov and the masters of poetry - the lyricists Fet, Tyutchev and the poet-citizen Nekrasov. The purpose of the book is to acquaint young readers with the brilliant resolution of the task set by Lomonosov of creating Russian national literature by classic writers of the second half of the 19th century, following the path of Pushkin and Lermontov. In their work, all the virtues of the Russian national literary language were fully revealed, about which Lomonosov wrote with such patriotic pathos and Gogol and Turgenev spoke no less enthusiastically after him. The exceptional originality and originality of the artistic style - Gogol's, Turgenev's, Tolstoy's, Chekhov's and Nekrasov's - clearly testify to the inexhaustible riches of the Russian language. When selecting material, not only artistic perception was taken into account, but also mainly the educational impact of classical literature on the outlook of youth. A through line in the collection is the patriotic theme allocated to a special heading; in works, in individual statements of the writer, in diaries and letters. A significant place is given to the statements of contemporaries who directly experienced the beneficial influence of creativity or personal communication with the writer himself. There are also such eloquent documents recognizing the educational role of the writers' work by the youth themselves, such as the "Proclamation of the People's Will" - about Turgenev and the "Address" of St. Petersburg students to Nekrasov. The very personality of the writer - his character, worldview, responses to the topical issues of the time, his thoughts and feelings in the process of creativity are most directly revealed in his letters. At the same time, the writers' correspondence is a chronicle of the literary and social life of the era in which they lived and worked. Therefore, correspondence is given a significant place in the book, especially since students, with very rare exceptions, are little acquainted with the wonderful epistolary heritage of our classics. The main part of the content of the book - the texts of works of art. They are arranged in thematic order, which facilitates the task of choosing material for the programs of literary evenings. The texts of major works are given in abbreviated form or in the form of a montage of excerpts on a specific topic. The statements of writers on literary issues are collected in separate headings: on the criteria for assessing the merits of a work of art, on the literary language, on the importance of folk art in the development of the literary language, etc. For epigraphs and afterwords to works, brief but accurate assessments of critics or notes by the author himself about his creative intentions are used. Directing the reader's attention to the essence of the content or social significance of the work, these incidental responses arouse his interest in a wider acquaintance with the writer's work. At the end of each chapter are short explanatory articles by the compiler of the collection.
