The book tells about the life of a real person, Russian officer Sergei Nepeitsyn. A disabled man who lost his leg as a young man during the assault on the Turkish fortress of Ochakov, Nepeitsyn served at the Tula Arms Factory, then was a mayor in Velikie Luki. With the outbreak of World War II against the French, Nepeitsyn volunteered to join the corps of troops that defended the path to St. Petersburg from the enemy, and soon became famous as a dashing partisan leader (he could ride thanks to an artificial leg made by the famous mechanic Kulibin). Transferred then for distinction to the Guards Semyonovsky Regiment, Nepeitsyn fought his way to Paris, which was taken by Russian troops in the spring of 1814. In this regiment, he became close to a circle of enlightened young officers - the future Decembrists.
