A lot has been written aboutthe history of the Russian fleet in the first century of its existence. Battles and campaigns, construction of shipyards and ships have been studied in detail. However, very little is known about the people who created the fleet and created its history. Of course, in previously published books and articles, names are mentioned to some extent, but usually in passing and in connection with a specific event.
In this book, biographies not only of famous admirals and navigators of the ., such as F. M. Apraksin,I. I. Bering,S. K. Greig,K. I. Kruys,F. F. Ushakov, but also hundreds of other, less well-known and completely forgotten surnames. One of the features of the domestic fleet of the XVIII century. - service of foreigners under St. Andrew's flag. This tradition was founded Peter I. Almost all of them served Russia honestly and faithfully.
The book for the first time gives such a complete description of their service in the Russian fleet. Biographies of foreigners make up almost a third of all those given in the book. We will learn how the British father and son Paddon, the American Jones, the Dutchman A.E. Shelting, the Greek A.P. Alexiano, the Spaniard O.M. Deribas, the Frenchman K. Nassau-Siegen and others served. Many of them worthily inscribed their names in the history of the Russian fleet and were awarded orders of the Russian Empire.
What else is a book good for? The fact that it is full of unique factual material - thousands of dates, hundreds of names of ships and vessels, exact military and civil ranks of characters, indications of battle sites, routes of campaigns, expeditions, etc. In fact, we have before us a kind of historical encyclopedia.
The author's desire to link the biographies of his heroes with modern life deserves approval - as the descendants honor the memory of brave sailors.
Undoubtedly of scientific value are the first published information from archival documents, specified dates of life on the basis of the St. Petersburg, Moscow and provincial necropolises.
In general, the book by V. M. Lurie will be an indispensable reference tool for history of the Russian fleet.
