This last Pushkin tale was written in 1834 (published in 1835) and is the only case in Pushkin when the plot of a Russian folk tale was based on a purely literary source: a playful short story by the American writer W. Irving "The Legend of the Arab Stargazer" . Pushkin, with amazing skill, replaced Irving's complex, confusing, burdened with extraneous details course of Irving's narration with a simple, clear, artistically expressive composition, and conditionally literary fantastic images with images of Russian folk poetry. On this basis, he created his own fairy tale, close both in ideological and figurative respect to genuine folk art. The playful form of the story, the ironic tone in the description of Tsar Dadon and his actions, the extreme brevity of the narration, the lack of author's explanations - all this often led critics to misunderstand the simple meaning of the tale of the golden cockerel: they were looking for a political theme in it, hints at Pushkin's personal relationship with Nikolai I, etc. In fact, Pushkin wrote a playful tale on the theme of the danger, the fatality of female charms. I’ll put Pushkin’s favorite editions from childhood with illustrations by famous Belarusian artists: Nikolai Seleschuk, Valery Slauk, Tatyana Berezenskaya on the shelf of Shkap.
