A. Akhmatova's poem "Requiem" was created over a long period of time. Her first sketches date back to 1934. At first, A. Akhmatova planned to create a lyrical cycle, but after a while she renamed it a poem. The first two chapters were written in 1934-1935

In the process of writing the poem, the author and her family faced severe trials. First, on October 24, 1935, her unofficial husband, Nikolai Punin, and son from marriage with Nikolai Gumilyov, Lev Gumilyov, were arrested on charges of counter-revolutionary activities. A. Akhmatova wrote a petition to I.V. Stalin, and on November 4 of the same year, N. Punin and L. Gumilyov were released. Even more terrible for A. Akhmatova was 1938, when L. Gumilyov was again arrested on the same charge. The poetess spent 17-19 hours in queues at the Kresty pre-trial detention center with parcels for her son, and there she finalized the manuscripts of the poem in the checkpoints. After the detention center, L. Gumilyov went to the camp, and from there to the front and returned home only after the victory. In 1949, he was again arrested on the same charges, received a second camp term - 10 years, but in 1956 he was found not guilty and released.

The most fruitful A. Akhmatova worked on the poem in 1938-1940. and returned to it later, in the late 1950s. An interesting fact is that all these years the manuscript of the "Requiem" did not exist, the verses of the poem were kept only in the memory of Anna Andreevna herself and her two closest and most reliable friends: Nadezhda Yakovlevna Mandelstam (widow of the great poet Osip Mandelstam) and Lydia Korneevna Chukovskaya, daughter legendary Korney Ivanovich Chukovsky. For the first time, A. Akhmatova decided to write down a poem on paper only in December 1962

In the 1960s. "Requiem" began to be distributed in samizdat. In 1963, one of the copies of the poem went abroad, where it was first published in full (Munich edition 1963). On the back of the title page there was a note: "The text is published without the knowledge and consent of the author."

Requiem by A. Akhmatova was published in the USSR only 22 years after the death of the poetess. This work is still considered the highest example of truly civil poetry.
