HOW THE JEWS MADE IT

Tatiana Rozina. The Way to Germany, or Revelations of an Ordinary Emigrant. - Cologne-Krasnodar: Library of Babylon, 2007, 280 p.

Tatiana Rozina has been living in Germany for fifteen years, runs her own marriage agency and writes books, one of which, How to Marry a Foreigner, became a bestseller in Russia, according to the Internet.

But in the new book by Tatiana Rozina you will not find advice on how to lure careless Germans. By genre, this is a documentary novel, a novel about how Soviet people fled the country at the dawn of the 90s. How they stood for days in lines at the embassies, how they pretended to be Jews, how they bought false visas, how they brought coils of wire, vodka and nesting dolls from the country they were leaving. How they surrendered to the police and demanded political asylum. As during interrogations, they invented tragic biographies for themselves. But they also hung around - already there.

Throughout the novel, the author tries to answer the question: what drives all those who left their job, home, relatives in Russia and left in search of a better life. And Tatyana Rozina finds one universal answer: they all had a very bad time in Russia. Not everyone felt well abroad, but practically no one - both from the main characters of the book and from the episodic ones - does not regret his decision to leave Russia.

It is said that Europe is now more integrated than ever before. They say that now it doesn't matter where to live - they say, we all live in a global space of entropy, we are all citizens of an unknown where the planet is flying. But then what to do with, excuse me, queues in clinics? On one sixth of the land they are, and five sixths of them are free. It would seem a trifle. But somehow it turns out by itself that because of such trifles, insignificant details, the overall picture of idyllic cosmopolitanism is destroyed. God is not in power, and not even in truth. God, as it turns out, is in the details. In such details as the cost of living, stale bread in the general store and pensioners collecting empty bottles. Maybe it's good to live in two-story houses without a foundation, but one cannot survive the Russian winter in such a house; maybe it’s good to drive small cars, but only in the village of Kotly, it doesn’t matter which provincial province you can drive only on KamAZ. So decide for yourself what your god is - the cosmopolitanism of citizens who knows where the planet is flying or the little things that make up the smell of unmowed fields of Voronezh villages and the midnight sky over Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.
