In the novel by Yuri Teshkin `Joseph the Great, or the Secret Monastery` the most tragic and heroic era in Russian history is presented - the era that is usually called Stalin's. In the center of the narrative is the figure of I.V. Stalin, his activities from a young age until the last days of his life. The author comes to an unexpected conclusion: in those years the whole country was something like a huge secret monastery. With all the outward revelry of atheism, very many people remained believers, even in the highest echelons of communist power. At the height of the war, churches began to reopen, persecution subsided, priests were released from prisons, and the patriarchate was revived. Great elders appeared, praying for the salvation of the Soviet people. But, of course, it was not a miracle that saved us, but the communist-Orthodox conviction that there is nothing higher than laying down your head for your friends. Stalin himself, our patriarchs - both Alexy and Sergius - called the God-bearing leader, considering him by no means an atheist.
