The historical dilogy "The Great Ocean", written by the Russian Soviet writer Ivan Fyodorovich Kratt (1899-1950), tells about the brave explorers who came to the shores of Alaska at the end of the 17th century and tried to gain a foothold in Northern California, where in 1812 the Russian a settlement called "Ross" (i.e. "Russian"), the current Fort Ross in the US state of California. The writer created a colorful image of Alexander Andreevich Baranov (1746-1819), the first ruler of Russian settlements in America. The novel consists of the books "Baranov's Island" (1945) and "Ross Colony" (1950).
