Throughout the Christian world this book is known as the "Bible of the East." Millions of people turn to her every day for advice and, surprisingly, she helps them. For four millennia, the “Book of Changes” asks questions instead of clear answers. It makes you think and understand: what situation you are in and how this situation will develop. In addition, as is known, “in Chinese philosophy, all roads lead to this monument”...
The I Ching is the earliest Chinese philosophical text known to history. Adopted by the Confucian tradition in the 2nd century BC. e. as one of the canons of the Confucian Pentateuch.
“Book of Changes” is a name that has stuck in the West. A more correct, although not so euphonious, option is the “Canon of Changes”
The existing system of the Book developed mainly during the Zhou dynasty and, unlike the mantic systems of earlier times, it is called the “Zhou Book of Changes”.
It consists of 64 symbols - hexagrams, each of which expresses a particular life situation in time from the point of view of its gradual development. The symbols consist of six strokes each; features indicate successive stages of development of a given situation. There are two types of traits: either whole (they are also called nines), or interrupted in the middle (sixes) (there is also a color difference in the traits, so “nines” are designated white, “sixes” are designated black). This is due to the fact that the former symbolize the active state, light, tension (yang), and the latter symbolize the passive state, darkness, pliability (yin). It is generally accepted that features are read from bottom to top (although the opposite interpretation is also found); their sequence describes the development of the situation.
Each hexagram can also be represented as a combination of two trigrams. Each hexagram, as well as each line in the hexagram, is accompanied by a set of aphorisms, which should give advice to the fortuneteller. Fortune-telling consists of choosing, using rather complex pseudo-random procedures using coins or yarrow branches, six traits and searching in a book for the corresponding hexagram (the process of fortune-telling using yarrow is described in detail in Xi Qi Zhuan-e (系辞传 xìcí zhuàn), commentary, included in the so-called “wings” of the book of changes).
This system is the fruit of centuries of accumulated experience in observing the world, the real, colorful world. Here it is quite appropriate to remember what Goethe says about the world of colors: colors are the actions and sufferings of light. You can feel the “Book of Changes” as an epic of the interaction of light and darkness. Then it acquires both colorfulness and expressiveness.
