In this short book, the publishers invite readers to get acquainted with the history of the emergence of such a Lenten service as Passia, to study her rites, and to be strengthened by the pastoral word, which is presented on the pages of this publication in four sermons. The preface of the book says that the word "passion" comes from the Latin "passio", which means "suffering". The special services celebrated during Great Lent owe their name to the fact that their rite is composed of the hymns of Holy Week, the reading of the gospel narratives about the Passion of Christ, as well as the akathist to the Passion of the Lord or the Cross and teaching about the salvific meaning of the redemptive sufferings of Christ. Passions got their start in the West, where they were a dramatic depiction of the sufferings of Christ the Savior on the Cross. The reading of the gospel narrative of the sufferings of the Lord was accompanied by music and a kind of dramatic performance: the words of Christ were performed by one priest-singer, the words of the high priest by another, the text about the events by a third; a significant place was given to the choir; all the action was performed in appropriate attire.
