The monograph brought to the attention of the reader is based on a critical analysis of paleontological data on the phylogeny of reptiles. We, of course, did not set an impossible goal - to provide a complete analysis and correct interpretation of the phylogenetic relationships between all the main groups of reptiles. It is too early to talk about completed results in phylogenetic studies on reptiles, as well as on tetrapods in general. The enthusiasm with which proponents of cladistic phylogenetics talk, for example, about the revolution brought about by their research in views on the phylogeny of reptiles and the achievement of consensus regarding the taxonomy of archosaurs [Benton, 1982, 1984a], seems to us, to put it mildly, premature. In phylogenetics, perhaps more strongly than in many other areas of biology, there is a generalization that is jokingly called J. Simpson’s third law: “Whatever kind of problem we face, we always do not have enough information to solve it definitively” [Simpson, 1983]. In any case, in phylogenetics this “law” manifests itself quite clearly. Simpson's "law" is greatly strengthened by the fact that the discovery of new facts, while clarifying some problems, raises new questions, for the solution of which again there are not enough facts. Due to these circumstances, the results of phylogenetic analysis inevitably become ambiguous.
