More info

Alexei Nikolaevich Pleshcheev (1825-1893) is known primarily as a poet, whose best poems from the first school years sink into our memory and, having become romances and songs, constantly adorn concert programs. But A.N. Pleshcheev is also the author of a rather extensive prose heritage, from which stories of the 40s and 50s are offered to the attention of readers. In Pleshcheev's prose, it is not difficult to trace the civic motives of his poetry: compassion for the common man, protest against the humiliation of a person, against violence and arbitrariness in any form, ridicule of ignorance, obscurantism, class and bureaucratic arrogance. Like all the works of the writer, the prose of A.N. Pleshcheev is distinguished by persistent, consistent democracy and unshakable faith in the lofty ideals of love of people, humanism and freedom.
