Story / intro. articles by Vera von Wieren-Garchinsky and Boris Filippov. For the first time, the October magazine published the story of Mikhail Zoshchenko (1895-1958) Before Sunrise (originally titled The Keys of Happiness) in the sixth and seventh issues in 1943. These issues of journals became a bibliographic rarity on the second day after their publication. Soon the persecution of the writer began and the issues of the magazines with the story were withdrawn from the libraries. In the USSR, the story was no longer reprinted. It was first published in full only in 1967 in the USA. In publisher's calico binding by N. Safonov. Zoshchenko's portrait, placed on p. 35, made by Yu. Annenkov. The book was printed in Germany. Mikhail Zoshchenko's autobiographical book Before Sunrise, which the author considered his main work, was created in the forties, but the writer went to it almost from the first literary steps. This is a very special prose, in which the creator of hilariously funny and grotesque stories, essays and feuilletons, appears as a person who has experienced a "bitter and sad life." Among the memories (about his childhood, adolescence, youth, meetings with famous writers, about his first love), among thoughts and dreams, Zoshchenko seeks to find the causes of his sadness, his spiritual fear, subjecting his past to scrutiny.
